Essie Coat Couture

This polish was such a disappointment. I rushed to Target to purchase Essie Coat Couture, the only of the spring matte collection that I felt was a must have, and excitedly posted bottle shots on Instagram of the lovely blue shimmer swimming in the grey toned blurple base.  When I needed my nails dry quickly, I thought what a perfect time to test out this matte since they are known to dry super quickly.

Unfortunately, in the time I saved drying, I wasted in applying this horrible formula. Clumpy, uneven, and a general headache of a polish, Coat Couture just refused to self level and lay straight along the cuticle line. As a matte, it looked horrible; like I dipped my fingers in purple clay and let it just dry and crust up. I used a top coat which definitely helped bring the shimmer to life and smooth out the imperfections but still, I'm not thrilled with how Coat Couture sits on the nail. Perhaps I need to use some thinner to make this polish more usable but as it stands, this Essie was not user friendly.

This was three coats, I think. It's hard to tell because I had to go back to individual nails to fix messy cuticle lines or wonky application.

I really want to love this, I really do, but it's so hard when the formula just won't cooperate. Did anyone else have this issue? Please let me know in the comments. I might just have a bum bottle.

  1. Such a pretty color but bummer to hear that the formula just wasn't there.

  2. Oh my what a gorgeous color! You'd expect a better formula considering it's what they do. Where is the quality control?

  3. It's such a gorgeous color, but a shame to hear that the formula was awful. Lame!!

  4. I didn't have any issues at all with application on mine!

  5. I know! I hate when the formula just doesn't live up.

  6. Oh Essie, why do you taunt us so? Half of the polishes have just perfect formula's and the other half are complete crap and there is just no way to tell which polish will behave accordingly. Sigh. This is a beautiful color, though! DAMMIT ESSIE!
