Twinsie Tuesday: Fishtail

Before I begin, I want to extend a huge welcome to three new Twinsies: Kelly from Tuxarina, Lakeisha from Refined and Polished, and Traci from DrinkCitra.  Each of these girls is absolutely fantastic and I am so thrilled to have them on board!

For today's theme, we are challenged to create a fishtail mani.  We had some internal debate about whether this meant braided or chevrons and in the end, we concluded that we should do whatever we think fits the bill.  In the spirit of bad nail artistry, I went with the latter since I assumed that could be done semi-painlessly with tape.

However, in the spirit of the theme, my color choices were inspired by the most famous "fish" I could think of: Ariel from the Little Mermaid.  I began with Orly Coachella Dweller, a dusty pistachio pastel creme.  The formula was a bit weird and gave me issues by my cuticles (not that they're in great shape these days, sadly), but was satisfactorily opaque in three coats.  Once dry, I used tape to create my first chevron in Sinful Colors Candy Coated, a soft lilac creme with hidden shimmer.  Then once that dried, I used tape again for an unnamed red jelly from Kozmic Colours, a brand that my best friend found at Forever 21.

I can't say it was a huge success since I globbed the red chevron on and it didn't allow for a nice tape removal, hence the non-straight lines.  To jazz it up a bit, I whipped out my handy dandy dotting tools (that always make me think of Elizabeth) and played around a bit.  I guess you could say those are water bubbles?

Not my favorite mani in the world, but certainly not my most boring.  And let's give a shout out to my inspiration and first Disney princess I was aware of, Ariel.

  2. Me too! When I was like three, my whole room was decorated in Ariel and my grandmother knitted me a matching afghan. Looking back, it was a bit of an late '80s/early '90s over the top color'splosion, but I loved it at the time.

  11. Beautiful mani and I love Ariel! I had all kinds of Ariel stuff as a kid. In fact, I played with my Ariel doll so much that both her legs fell off haha.

  12. I wanted to do chevrons but mine are horrid. The braid worked better for me. Very pretty colors! Ariel was also my first Disney princess I was aware of, I remember renting it over and over.

  17. I'm so not into Modern Art so I personally wouldn't go for this, but hey, I got through a week without cheating so I count that as a win.

  18. Not only a week without cheating, but awesome colours and two--count 'em, two!--different nail art techniques? Major Win (salute)!

  19. These are so cute, Amanda! Love the colour combination so, so much (yay, Ariel!), and the shapes totally come together to suggest bubbles and the tail. Modern art is happening here!
