Ah, Tuesday. You come around so often.
For today's Twinsie post, we have to swatch a ruffian manicure. In essence, the ruffian mani is an upside down half moon.
Inspired by Nory's foray into nudes and neons, I decided to venture in that direction for this post. I started with three coats of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Without a Stitch, a yellow-leaning cream creme (cream as the color, creme as the formula) that on me looked slightly nude-ish. Since my skin is pink-toned, the uber pale buttercream was a really subtle pop on my nails.
Over that, I free-handed my ruffian with an unnamed neon Cynthia Rowley polish I reviewed back in the summer. I absolutely adore this color -- although I kinda hate it doesn't have a name -- and while I dislike the summer, makes me crave for times when I can comfortably sport such bright shades. Since it the Sally Hansen worked as its underwear, the neon glowed with one coat. As you can see, it dried matte. Since I don't often swatch matte polishes, I figured I'd leave it as a treat to those that do... and also because the top coat was upstairs and I was downstairs when I went to swatch this mani. But mostly as a treat.

| Not thrilled with the ruffian line of my middle finger so if it's annoying you as a reader, imagine how aggravating it is to me. Argh. |
Even though the Cynthia Rowley is a classic neon matte, I like how even without top coat there's almost an electric shimmer that appears at a certain light. Regardless, coral-toned red neons are real favorites so I'd be hard-pressed to find fault in this.
But to the ruffian conclusion. Personally, I don't get the appeal of the ruffian manicure. To me, it's like you just got lazy with your second coat and decided to start 7/8 of the way down your nail bed. I read somewhere that the designer (or whoever she was) that came up with this manicure idea she thought it looked like her cuticles were smiling at her. Um, okay, sure. When her cuticles start to hear voices, then I think we will all agree that this is was a ridiculous idea.

Love the colors together!
ReplyDeleteI really love how the yellow comes through that neon! And yeah totally digging that matte finish.. thanks for that ;)
ReplyDeleteI really liked this mani and yeah that middle finger's mani is quite annoying. :p This is looking better in matte though. Thanks for the lovely post.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI live to serve ;)
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure!
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I love the color combo! Ruffians are still very new for me but they look very cool once on :)
ReplyDeleteYou did such a good job! Love the neon and nude
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm the odd one out since I'm not a fan of them.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anne!
ReplyDeleteI think the neutral color under that neon might be accentuating that sense of not getting all the way down to the cuticle? I am really digging that matte neon hotness. I still really like this manicure, but I tend to enjoy ruffians. :)
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean, although when I did a ruffian with a darker color as base, it made my cuticles look dirty. But I never thought about it the opposite way :S
ReplyDeleteThis is really pretty!!! I love the polish you chose! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteI adore this color combo! Your comments about the founder of the ruffian cracked me up.
ReplyDeleteThat coral neon is fabulous, Amanda, and you did such a great job with this! I like how the shape of your ruffian compliments the shape of your nails. Overall I have kind of mixed feelings about this style, I think. It really can look super-cute, especially when you choose nicely contrasting colours like these, but it's so hard to get that top edge "just right." >_<
ReplyDeleteLol, thank you!
ReplyDeleteDidn't even realize I had complemented my nail shape bit I'll take it! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteLove the colors!!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it ;) This looks absolutely beautiful! The colors are fantastic together!
ReplyDeleteGreat color combo! I have some of those Cynthia's too. Boo no-name polishes!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteHa, thanks, but it was making me nuts ;)
ReplyDeletelol smiling cuticles...love that you used a nude and neon :)
ReplyDeleteI know. I hate not having names :(
ReplyDeleteThanks, Traci!
ReplyDeleteI love that you used a neon and a nude. I agree, anyone who thinks their cuticles are smilng at them is a bit nutty ;)
ReplyDeleteI love that my fellow New Yorker understands :)
ReplyDeleteI love the neon and neutral combo!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDelete"But mostly as a treat." You always crack me up, Amanda! I love the neon and nude combo.

ReplyDeleteLove this matte ruffian :) And colors are so strong and beautiful!
