China Glaze Cast a Spell: Swatches and Comparisons

My favorite collections from China Glaze is consistently their Halloween polishes.  While I don't really celebrate Halloween or am particularly festive with this holiday, I have a weakness for the dark, vampy colors that represent this time of year.

Another of the winners from this year's China Glaze Halloween collection is Cast a Spell, a blackened olive creme base infused with stunningly gorgeous golden flakie shimmer.  I loved everything about this polish; the formula was so stellar, I used three coats when only two were needed just because I loved how buttery it applied.

As much as I love Cast a Spell, I knew that I had similar polishes in my stash.  I went digging and I found three others that could possibly be dupes.

Left to Right:
China Glaze Cast a Spell, L'oreal Owl's Night, Essence Gold Old Buffy, Maybelline Twilight Rays
Each polish is three coats.

Of the four, Twilight Rays is the most distinct, with a black jelly base and sparser gold flakies that are larger than those in the other three polishes.  The L'oreal and Essence are most closely dupes, with browner creme bases, although Gold Old Buffy's gold flakies are just a tad bigger than Owl's Night.  Cast a Spell is a tad lighter with the blackened olive base but has the same fine microshimmer of Owl's Night.  All of that being said, I would consider Cast a Spell, Owl's Night, and Gold Old Buffy dupes.  Twilight Rays is in the same color family, but definitely not a dupe.

As to formula, the L'oreal and China Glaze are the best, thick and easy to apply.  The Essence is a bit on the thinner side but is completely opaque in three coats.  The Maybelline was watery and not as easy to apply.  If I had to choose a favorite, it's a toss up between Cast a Spell and Owl's Night.

  1. I almost got this one, but then talked myself out of it. I guess that's okay because I already have the L'Oreal one anyway. Thanks for the comparison!

  17. I have both the China Glaze and the L'Oreal. I think I like the China Glaze better as for me it's a bit more green.
