Amanda's Must Haves: The Basics

As someone with very specific skin issues and very picky taste, I'm always interested to see what other people recommend for makeup, face products, etc.  Typically, I'm so sensitive and allergic to everything, I can't really indulge, but I figured why not share my basic makeup and face care must-haves in case someone else suffers from dry, highly sensitive skin?

So without further ado and in no particular order, here are my beauty basics:

Maybelline Falsies Mascara
I think finding the right mascara is probably as important as finding the right man: you go through so many -- the cheap, the high-end, some irritating, some flaky -- but once you have the perfect fit, you feel absolutely beautiful.  This is how I felt with Maybelline Falsies mascara.  I personally wear the Blackest Black or Black Drama, depending on what's available at my drugstore at the time, and never ever get waterproof.  Regardless of your color or solubility preference, Falsies is simply a miracle in a tube, providing my fairly long lashes with a good dose of thickening and darkening that really just make my eyes pop.  I experience no flaking with this mascara and it literally lasts for days if I don't take it off (don't ask why I know that).  It's normally non-irritating but I'll occasionally get some itching around my eyes; but again, I'm allergic to everything so if I'm only sporadically experiencing something, that is a good sign for normal people with normal skin.

Aquaphor
Now this is a product I absolutely swear by.  I have every size and version of this imaginable hidden in every bag, room, and crevice in my house.  I even keep reserves at my boyfriend's apartment.  This ointment is very similar to Vaseline but unlike standard petroleum jelly, does not contain any minute traces of animal byproduct or excess chemicals that are often found in those (I was told by a doctor that because some of the byproduct is so minimal, companies are not required by law to list them).  Regardless, Aquaphor ointment is simply my go to for everything.  I use it on my lips mostly and have also used it for my cuticles, but one of the best uses I've found is as a night moisturizer for my face.  Now, keep in mind I have dry, sensitive skin and my eczema gets most inflamed in the winter.  Slathering this all over my face before bed really helps seal in the moisture for the next day and gives me a really great glow.  I know that this isn't the best use for everyone -- and even I can't put it on my nose because it would clog me up -- but it's a great use of a basic product for girls like me.  Plus, because of this technique, I received my famous college moniker by my best friend, She Who Shines at Night.

CoverGirl Aqua CG Smoothers Tinted Moisturizer
I think tinted moisturizer is one of the best things since sliced bread.  With a tiny bit of coverage and SPF, you can even out your face while protecting and nourishing it all at the same time.  CoverGirl's tinted moisturizer is another great product that does not get me all red and inflamed.  Instead, this is a light moisturizer that I use under my makeup in the morning, lightly rubbing it all over my face, from forehead to chin.  While it doesn't provide an exceptional amount of moisturizing throughout the day, it isn't drying and great for simple summer coverage.  I've been using this for years.

CoverGirl Aquasmooth Compact Foundation
By now I think you get that I'm a girl that likes her face hydrated and supple.  I don't wear foundation because I find it to be terrible uncomfortable, but when I need a little extra evening, I go to the Aquasmooth Compact Foundation, which is rich and creamy and doesn't feel heavy at all on my face.  Because it's not a true liquid foundation, it doesn't cake on, and actually applies like a slightly more opaque tinted moisturizer.  Whenever I wear this, I get tons of compliments on my skin.  It isn't, however, long-lasting, but because it's so hydrating, it disappears seamlessly into my skin without any uneven discoloration.

The Body Shop Lightening Touch
People have sworn by YSL Touche Eclat for as longer as I remember.  Because of the hype for this undereye concealer, I picked it up in duty-free on a flight back from England.  And surprise, surprise, what do you know, I suffer a terrible allergic reaction.  I was always hesitant after that to use anything under my eyes until I decided to tempt fate and see what The Body Shop had to offer.  I wanted something with a bit of iridescence instead of a matte concealer and was directed to Lightening Touch by one of the sales clerks.  And boy does this concealer deliver: light, reflective, and refreshing.  While I tend to only use this before I go out at night, I've used this and the tinted moisturizer as my only base in the summer for a natural and light face.

NYC In a Minute Quick Dry in Grand Central Station
And how could I forget a nail polish staple?  Of course not!  This $1.99 drugstore find is the absolute best quick dry topcoat I have ever used.  With this baby, my nails dry in minutes and the shine is unbelievable.  I've used more expensive products for quick drying but this is the one I consistently go back to.  My only issue I have with this product is by the time I've finished about 2/3 of the bottle, the formula gets exceptionally thick and very difficult to apply.  I'm sure thinner would fix that but as I don't have thinner (I always seem to forget to pick that up at every Sally's visit), I'm more comfortable chucking a $2 bottle and getting a new one if necessary.

Dior Miss Dior Cherie Eau de Parfum
I love anything that smells like vanilla, cake, or pastries.  For most of my life, I invested in moderately cheap vanilla body sprays or Aqualina Pink Sugar eau de toilette which I loved, but felt were not necessarily mature scents that I should be wearing to work.  Enter Miss Dior Cherie eau de parfum (the eau de toilette smells completely different and not nearly as nice).  This rich, sweet smelling perfume definitely has the vanilla overtones I gravitate towards, but there's a stronger base that balances this scent.  I'm not that well versed in perfume verbiage, but the one thing I can say is that this perfume makes me feel sultry and cozy and reminds me of winter in New York City.

Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub
A girl's got to exfoliate, doesn't she?  Apricot pits which are often used in drugstore exfoliator scrubs are just not a viable option for someone with sensitive skin as they are abrasive and harsh.  Instead, I turn to Aveeno's soy-based exfoliating scrub to slough off the dead skin on my face about twice a week.  I'm also a fan of the way this product smells, which helps when you're spending about a minute attempting to scrub the blackheads out your nose.

Dove Beauty Bar
Lastly, I have the simplest of the simple: the original white Dove Beauty Bar.  For everyday face and body cleansing, I turn to Dove.  No scents, no chemicals, just a really rich lathering soap that cleans my face without irritation.  Newer products may have fancy schmancy packaging, but the oldies are always the goodies.

Now it's your turn.  What are you beauty basics and go-to products you use everyday?

  1. I love the Falsies mascara, it is my everyday mascara! I have been using it religiously ever since it came out! Dove soap bars <3 I love them, it's the soap we use at home, everybody's favorite. I am a huge love of the NYC top coat, it does get thick but I don't mind paying $2 for another bottle!

  6. Falsies mascara is great! I'm glad that you have found some great products that work for your skin type. My all-time favorite can't-go-without cheapie product has to be CARMEX. I don't care what anyone says about it...it's not bedtime until Carmex is on my lips! :)

  7. ok I gotta stand up for Aqualina. I love that stuff! And anything that smells like vanilla or cake. I actually have the "hair perfume" which I do not use every time I do not wash, but was a must in Vegas and in the summer if I feel my head sweats at all. When I was in Vegas I also discovered it works well as a body spray - it has silicone in it (or something comparable) as it adds shine, and I think minimal alcohol, so it has the lightness of a body spray but not the alcohol scent and it lasts longer.

  12. Falsies is my all time favorite mascara. I also love Grand Central Station. When my bottle gets thick, I save it for putting over bumpy glitter. I forgot who I heard this from but it works pretty good for me. I also use Dove a lot but don't have it currently.
