Twinsie Tuesday: Fugly Color

For today's Twinsie Tuesday post, there was a lot of internal debate in the Twinserverse.  What exactly constitutes a fugly color?

While some maintained that fugly is basically freakin' ugly (see Tara's post for today for an example of that school of thought), I have always thought fugly meant so ugly, it's fantastic.  I'm sure among the Twinsies' posts today, you'll see some differing color choices, but here on Amandalandish, you will see three (yes, three; I couldn't narrow it down this week) different polishes that under any other time or circumstance would be ugly to me, but because of trends, pop culture, or simply maturing taste (questionable), I find these now friggin' fugly and fabulous!

To start off, I have Zoya Yara, a deep olive creme with the famous Zoya golden glass fleck finish.  From the Fall 2011 collection, I initially steered clear of this smokey, puked up moss color.  But what can I say?  I'm nothing if not completely susceptible to powers of pop culture persuasion and found myself lemming this desperately after seeing InStyle (the fashion mag, not the gossip rag) call this the color of the season or some such epitaph.  Yara applied in two buttery coats and I just love, love, love her.

Another fugly color that I wouldn't have touched with a ten foot pole would definitely have been Spoiled I'm So Jaded pre-Spring 2012.  I totally got caught up in the neon craze this year and was very appreciative that the more affordable drugstore brands caught on so that I could feed the fad without breaking the bank.  What I really like about this toxic, slime color is the amazing hidden golden shimmer that you can sort of make out from my swatch.  That shimmer is really what makes this neon green less ninja turtle and more edgy cool.  This is three coats of the best application of any Spoiled polish I've ever tried.  And if you know Spoiled's typical application, you'll know that's saying something.

Lastly, I have OPI Just Spotted the Lizard from the recent Spiderman collection that was sent my way by my polish bestie, Nory (thank you, girly!).  One of the many Chanel Peridot dupes, I was shriekingly excited (a term I just made up) when I got this in the mail.  When Peridot was released last summer, I was actually a hater.  Who cares about a weid golden olive duochrome metallic? thought Amanda, How in the world is that consider pretty?  Cut to a year later, and I'm already planning my fall wardrobe around this awesome shade.  I'm not sure how the Chanel applied, but the OPI was very brushstroke-y and even though I used three coats, I wasn't in love with the streaky finish.  The color, however, is pretty unbelievable, she says now, with blue burned edges around the golden olive.  You can make the blue out best in the bottle which is disappointing because if it was more present on the nail, I think I might have married this polish.

So those are my three fuglies.  I'm actually really curious to see if I still love these in a year and how truly and despicably malleable I am to the whims of fashion wonks and bloggerettes.  Yara has been a beloved for a year now, so I guess that gives me a bit more respect for myself.  But I can stomach being a flaky polish hoarder if it means enjoying these beauties...if only for a season or two.

Make sure to check out my Twinsies' fuglies and what they consider to be fugly!

  1. I am in love with all three of these colors!! Especially the Spoiled one, reminds me a bit of ChG Limonyte! I like your spin on it, fugly meaning so ugly that it's fantastic!

  3. I'm So Jaded is amazingggg! It's one of my favorite greens in my stash. The shimmer is unbelievably gorgeous and I just love how bright it is. Yara is also awesome, I've been lemming after it for a while.

  8. Yara is super fugly! But, I still love it. I love that Spoiled green...reminds me of the CG summer neons! I also never saw the appeal of Peridot, but *had* to own that OPI when it came out as well ;) Great post!

  10. I find it rather amusing all three of your choices are somewhat green...Need I mention that I like them all<3 I had avoided picking up the Spoiled polish because of their sketchy formula, so it is good to know this one is better than normal.

  11. I noticed the green factor too! I think it's because up until I met Nory and she pushed me into the green family, I never really was drawn to them. I come from a very anti-green family, it's very funny. Even funnier because my best friend's last name is Greene.

But yeah, the Spoiled here was actually a pleasure. It's not China Glaze, but considering how horrible it tends to be, I'd splurge on the $2 for this if you love it.

  12. I like all of these!!! Green is one of my favorite colors, it just doesn't make it onto my nail a lot. I can never find the right ones!
