Sinful Colors Neon Melon

More yellow?  Why yes, I think I will.

Awhile back, the lovely lover of all things yellow, Nory, swatched the brightest polish I had ever seen, Illamasqua Rare.  Her husband had surprised her with the polish for their anniversary and she texted me with delight when she got it.  While I ooh and ahh over purples and reds, there was something so sweet about the story and the polish that I found myself making a mental note to pick up some version of a highlighter yellow polish.

I lucked out with Sinful Colors Neon Melon.  Yes, another Sinful Colors yellow.  From their summer neon collection, Neon Melon is, to quote myself again, the truest highlighter yellow I have ever seen.  I saved this polish to wear on the weekends when I had nowhere formal to go and loved every minute of it!

Here's the rub: the application.  This polish required five coats to get to this point.  I had initially stopped at four, applied quick dry, and let it set.  But I just couldn't take the unevenness and bald spots so I applied another coat and then another top coat.  Which I guess means that this manicure including base coat is comprised of eight coats.

I think the major issue apart from the initial streakiness is that because neons are typically matte, they dry quicker than regular polish.  So even when I went back to even it out with an additional coat (and then another and then another and then another), it had already dried and only made the next coat look weird.  But by the fifth colored coat, I was happy with my final result.

The second picture is more color accurate, as the first photo pulls more banana yellow than this polish actually is.  Also, cool point: even though this isn't technically a glow in the dark polish this baby was really cool once the lights were off.  Totally worth the eight coats and twenty minute mani...although next time I just use white underwear to make it easier.

Would you use eight coats for color you loved?

  1. oh my god, I could never use that many coats. I get pissed when I have to do three coats of my color! It does look great, though!

  6. Don't you hate when the color's amazingness just doesn't align with the application? So sad.

  8. The color is awesome and pretty, but that is a lot of coats! I'm not sure if I'd want to deal with that.

  12. I understand, buy that's why I'm hoping a white base might alleviate that issue.

  16. I think if you find the right shade, you could make it work. Harder than the peach conundrum so I won't challenge you there...

  28. Such a pretty yellow. It looks nice and even ... I would do a lot for a great color, and five coats ain't so bad, especially for a yellow. Saying eight coats sounds so bad but when you look at your nails, I just hear "ei....How pretty." =)

  29. Haha! Yeah, it was a lot of work but in the end I was so taken with it. I'd wear this again - eight coats and all - in a heart beat.
