Need my lovely nailphiles' help!

I was feeling adventurous last night and went out and got some circle label sticker thingies.  I had read on numerous blogs that creating the half moon manicure (a.k.a. reverse French) is fairly simply.  Being handicapped in the world of nail art and not much of fan of it to begin with, I thought half moons would be my compromise of staying a polish purist while also trying something new.

Anyways, I had an epic fail.  EPIC.  Only two nails came out semi decent.  I was so disgusted I didn't even bother taking a picture to show you ladies.  It was horrible.  (However, my color combo was really lovely: base coat Diamond Cosmetics Concrete Jungle with China Glaze Recycle overlay.)

So I ask you, my lovely readers and fellow polish enthusiasts, to please help a blogger out.  I used basic circle label stickers that look like this:

As I said, epic failure.  I waited until my base coats dried, I applied the stickers...everything that I was supposed to do.  So what did I do wrong??

  1. I haven't done a half moon mani myself yet, but have done several tape manis. Did you de-stick the stickers first? When I do a tape mani I stick the tape to my palm a couple times to get rid of most of the sticky. You also have to use your finger nail or an orange stick to make sure the tape/sticker is nice and snug to your cuticle or around the side of you nail. Without actually seeing what your results looked like, those are my recommendations. Could this comment be any longer? Seriously.

  2. I like the details! I did de-stick the stickers slightly but I need a little tackiness so that it stayed. The issue was when I took it off, for some reason the line just wasn't smooth.

  3. I haven't tried those yet so I'm not sure what went wrong, but from my understanding you are supposed to use these things: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00006IBUZ/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/182-9095226-1905468

  4. Thanks, Shally! I was actually looking for reinforcers, but since I couldn't find them, I picked up the circular labels. I'll keep my eye out though, that could've been my major mistake.

  5. Did you take off the stickers before or after the polish dried? If you take then off after it dries, it will pull up the polish. Here's the trick I use with any sticker/tape mani: do the base color, let dry completely (or, if you're impetuous like me, use seche vite and cut the dry time significantly). Apply stickers and make sure the edge touch the nail is flat all around. Paint your second color then remove sticker carefully. Do so for remaining nails (instead of waiting til you're done painting all ten to remove stickers). I hope that makes sense. I'm no good at giving directions, even in a GPS voice, that's why I don't homeschool my kids.

  6. Sometimes I use painters' tape instead of Scotch tape and the line is not as crisp. Scotch tape is a lot thinner so I get a much cleaner edge. If your stickers are thicker than the reinforcement thingys (that's a word, right?) that might be a reason for a not so pretty edge. And yeah, take off the sticker while the polish is still wet.

  7. Next time I attempt it, I'll try scotch tape. I was always scared to use something that sticky because I figured it would take the base polish off even it was dry. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Wish me luck for try #2!
